Romney’s Individual Mandate

The following video is of Romney presenting the individual mandate at The Heritage Foundation, a Conservative think tank in Washington D.C., in January 2006.
Below is another video of Romney praising the individual mandate, saying that it will drive costs down. This video is from March 2006:
“With regards to the individual mandate, the individual responsibility program that I proposed, I was very pleased that the compromise between the two houses includes the personal responsibility mandate. That is essential for bringing the health care costs down for everyone and getting everyone the health insurance they need.”
Context: Romney successfully implemented health care reform in Massachusetts and he lauded his plan, going as far as saying that the federal government should learn from what he was able to accomplish. This all changed when Obama implemented his health care reform law, which was modeled off of Romney’s own law in Massachusetts. The etch-a-sketch candidate quickly flopped on the issue and came out against “ObamaCare” as well as the individual mandate. On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the law in its entirety, but Romney still insists it is a bad policy which he intends on repealing if he wins the presidency.
