You Guys Are Bright Enough

“You guys are bright enough to look at the numbers. I came in and the jobs had been just falling right off a cliff, I came in and they kept falling for 11 months. And then we turned around and we’re coming back. And that’s progress. And if you are going to suggest to me that somehow the day I got elected, somehow jobs should have immediately turned around, well that would be silly. It takes awhile to get things turned around. We were in a recession, we were losing jobs every month.”

- Context: This was Mitt Romney’s response during a press conference in June 2006 after a reporter had brought up his poor performance when it came to creating jobs in Massachusetts as governor. Since he began his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney has repeatedly attacked Obama’s economic performance. In this instance, Mitt defended himself, saying that he inherited a bad economy which was shedding jobs and that no one should expect things to get better right after his election. There is little debate that Obama inherited one of the worst economies of the century. The country shed 3.5 million jobs in the last six months of the Bush administration, over half a million of them in the month ahead of Obama’s inauguration.
