A Voice To Foster Anti-Discirmination Efforts

August 24, 2012 § Leave a comment

“I think the gay community needs more support from the Republican party and I would be a voice in the Republican party to foster anti-discrimination efforts.”

  • Mitt Romney, August 25, 1994
  • Source: Bay Windows (original article from 1994)
  • Context: During his race for the U.S. Senate against Ted Kennedy in 1994, Romney did an interview with an LGBT paper where he showed his enthusiasm and support for gay rights. As a 2012 presidential contender, however, Romney is now opposed to gay marriage and other LGBT issues. In the same article, he also talks about his support for abortion, saying:

“My mom was a U.S. Senate candidate in 1970, before Roe v. Wade. My church feels that abortion is not a good choice. However, my mother advocated for the legalization of abortion. So they, like I, can live by and have personal beliefs which celebrate the diversity of our society, and fight for the right of all people to live by their own beliefs and to make their own choices.”
