- Context: In this video, Lenore talks about how George Romney and his family relied on government welfare to get back on their feet after fleeing the Mexican Revolution. On arrival, the Romney family received $250 (the equivalent of $6,000 in today’s dollars) on top of food, clothing, and supplies. Growing up, George Romney had his food, housing, and school taken care of by the United States government. As a 2012 presidential candidate, Mitt Romney has refused to acknowledge the role of government in helping millions of Americans, and has conveniently neglected to mention how his fathers family relied on government assistance. Mitt Romney himself was born into wealth, unlike his father.
