“I think he’s done rather well, in fact. I mean, we are out of Iraq, which is a timetable that President Bush had established, and I think we are slowly turning over in Afghanistan in a sensible way. Sooner or later, the two countries, the two peoples – the Afghanistan population and the Iraqi population – have to take responsibility for their own destiny and their own future. So I think he’s handled that well. He hasn’t gotten us in any new conflicts. I think he has been vicious on terrorists with drone attacks, getting rid of Bin Laden, and things like that. I think he’s protected the country rather well.”

- Context: Colin Powell praised President Obama on his foreign policy, although he stopped short of endorsing him as he did in 2008, saying that he is holding off until weighing all the issues. In the same interview, he criticizes the partisanship in Washington, which he says is the worst that he’s ever seen it in his 40 years in the capitol.

“As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality.”
“And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things.”
- Mitt Romney, July 30, 2012
- Source: Boston Globe
- Context: Romney was addressing Jewish donors at a campaign fundraising event at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. A senior aide to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responded saying that the statement was “racist” and that Romney “lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people.” Romney’s statement is also factually incorrect. The economic disparity between Israeli’s and Palestinians is actually much greater, with Palestinians having a GDP per capita ~1/30 that of Israelis. Israel occupies all of the West Bank and it has almost complete control of the Palestinian economy, inhibiting its economic growth. Other than culture, Romney also stated that the “hand of providence” was also responsible for Israels economic accomplishments. Sheldon Adelson, who has pledged to spend at least $100 million of his own money to defeat Obama, was also present at the event.
